How Friendly are Koalas?

Amanda from Canada wrote:
Are koalas friendly enogh to be a pet?

GLOBIO Traveling Teacher says:

Hi Amanda.

Koalas look sleepy and gentle but they can be grumpy and aggressive. They don't make good pets. Also, koalas eat only the leaves of certain types of eucalyptus trees, so they are very hard to care for in captivity.

How Cold Does It Get in the Rainforest?

Lilly from the Unites States wrote:

Does it ever get cold in the rainforest, what is the coldest temp there?

GLOBIO Traveling Teacher says:

Hi Lilly,

Yes, there are rainforest that can get very cold. Not all rainforests are warm or in the tropics, like the Amazon. Temperate rainforests grow in cool places like Alaska, and Tasmania, and on top of mountainous areas where most of the water comes from being in the mist and clouds much of the time. Some temperate rainforests even get occasional snow fall.

The most important thing a forest needs to be a rainforest is water, at least the equivalent of 200 cm (80 inches) a year. The temperature can be cold or warm.

What Is the Magnetic Field of the Earth?

Sabrina from United Kingdom wrote:

GLOBIO Traveling Teacher says:

Hi Sabrina.

The Earth's magnetic field helps to shield or protect us from charged particles traveling through space - mostly from our Sun. The Sun throws off powerful solar winds and solar storms. Most of these deflect off our magnetic field, but a few particles get trapped in what is called the "Van Allen Belts" in the area around Earth called the Magnetosphere. We can see these charged particles sometimes in the night sky as the Northern Lights or Southern Lights (or called the Aurora borealis (north) and Aurora australis (south)).

Exactly how or what forms the Earth's magnetic field is still being studied by scientists. They think it is probably from a combination the Earth's spinning outer core of molten metal, mostly nickel and iron, and possibly the heat the Earth is generating.
